THE HUSTLER'S METAMORPHOSIS

The Japanese consider the KOI to be the most energetic of fishes.
This is because it is constantly moving, often churning up water.

The Koi is also able to fight the current of the water and swim upstream.

This can be interpreted in two ways:

1. Being a non-conformist – Koi swimming upstream can be interpreted as showing the philosophy of non-conformism because of the fact that the Koi does not “go with the flow”. This can mean a person is very independent minded and does not do things the way they are expected of him or her. Swimming upstream can mean that a person is not easily influenced by others and does what he or she wants.
2. Strength in time of adversity – Koi fish also symbolizes persistence and the willingness to go on even though you are being swept away. It also symbolizes surpassing expectations. The Koi fish swimming upriver can show that a person has overcome various obstacles and not only does he or she keep standing, but he or she has come out victorious.

THE 5TH OF MAY IS NOT MEXICO'S INDEPENDENCE DAY

It is a common misconception among the non-Mexican community in the United States to mistake Cinco de Mayo, or May 5th, with the Mexican Independence Day, which occurs on September 16th; Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates the victory of the Mexican Army over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, during the French invasion of Mexico.   

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a voluntarily-observed holiday that commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. It is celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla and in the United States. 

While Cinco de Mayo has limited significance nationwide in Mexico, the date is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day, the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.

The Grito de Dolores ("Cry of Dolores") was the battle cry of the Mexican War of Independence also known as El Grito de la Independencia ("Cry of Independence"), uttered on September 16, 1810 by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Roman Catholic priest from the small town of Dolores, near Guanajuato.

Hidalgo and several criollos were involved in a planned revolt against the Spanish colonial government, and the plotters were betrayed. Fearing his arrest, Hidalgo commanded his brother Mauricio, as well as Ignacio Allende and Mariano Abasolo to go with a number of other armed men to make the sheriff release the pro-independence inmates there on the night of 15 September. They managed to set eighty free. Just before midnight on September 15, 1810, Hidalgo ordered the church bells to be rung and gathered his congregation. Flanked by Allende and Juan Aldama, he addressed the people in front of his church, encouraging them to revolt:

My children: a new dispensation comes to us today. Will you receive it? Will you free yourselves? Will you recover the lands stolen three hundred years ago from your forefathers by the hated Spaniards? We must act at once… Will you defend your religion and your rights as true patriots? Long live our Lady of Guadalupe! Death to bad government! Death to the gachupines!

This event has since assumed an almost mythic status. Since the late 19th century, Hidalgo y Costilla’s "cry of independence" has become emblematic of Mexican independence. Each year on the night of September 15, the President of Mexico rings the bell of the National Palace in Mexico City. He repeats a cry of patriotism (a Grito Mexicano) based upon the "Grito de Dolores" from the balcony of the palace to the assembled crowd in the Plaza de la Constitución, or Zócalo, one of the largest public plazas in the world.

This event draws up to half a million spectators. On the dawn of September 16, or Independence Day, the national military parade starts in the Zócalo, passes the Hidalgo Memorial and ends on the Paseo de la Reforma, Mexico City’s main boulevard.

The following day, September 16 is Independence Day in Mexico and is considered a patriotic holiday, or fiesta patria (literally, holiday of the fatherland).

...I Grew Up in TEXAS. 

 And, I grew up with our society, peddling Cinco De Mayo as Mexican Independence Day. 

 They taught this in school!!! (like how they teach Malcom X was a Black Panther in OR.)

 So, the moral of the story is: this country has made a national holiday out of  Indigenous Meso-Americans beating up the French, but not the revolt and insurrection against Spanish Colonial rule....that resulted in their subsequent liberation. Smacks of celebrating Martin Luther King's Birthday, minus Arizona, just not ON his birthday ;)

THE BIGGEST LOSER COMES TO DALLAS TONIGHT

It’s an exciting week on “The Biggest Loser: Couples” when the seven remaining contestants head to Dallas for a Texas-size adventure that will take them from running a 5K at the Cotton Bowl to a wild rodeo challenge on a special episode airing Tuesday, April 27 (8-10 p.m. ET) on NBC. Plus, season eight fan favorite Abby Rike guest stars.

Hoping to inspire overweight Texans and show them that bigger isn’t always better, the contestants stop by radio stations in Dallas and encourage listeners to come join them for a 5K at the Cotton Bowl. The players meet a cheering crowd at the stadium, and hear very emotional stories from local Texans about their personal weight loss struggles. While motivating the runners and walkers who have come out to join them, the seven finalists see themselves for the first time as the role models they have become.

Then it’s off to meet host Alison Sweeney for a wild rodeo challenge that will grant immunity to the lucky winner at this week’s weigh-in. And with only seven contestants left, it becomes clearer than ever who is willing to do whatever it takes to be in the final four. Also, Abby Rike, one of season eight’s most popular contestants, makes a special appearance and invites trainer Jillian Michaels to speak at her old high school. There, Jillian makes a special connection with a young girl struggling with her weight. Later, Michaels and trainer Bob Harper put the players through a grueling last chance workout, and then the contestants weigh in at the American Airlines Center on their last night in Dallas. A difficult, tearful elimination follows, leaving one player feeling very much alone.

JAZZZ RAPPER 'GURU' DIES (July 17, 1966 – April 19, 2010)

  
Keith Elam (July 17, 1966 – April 19, 2010), better known by his stage name Guru, was an American emcee and member of the hip-hop duo Gang Starr, along with DJ Premier. He was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts. The name Guru is a backronym that stands for Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal and the less-often used God is Universal; he is the Ruler Universal, which are both references to the teachings of the Nation of Gods and Earths.

On February 28, 2010, Guru went into cardiac arrest and, following surgery, fell into a coma. It was claimed that Guru had briefly wakened from his coma but died on April 19, 2010, aged 47, from multiple myeloma.

In a letter purportedly drafted on his deathbed, Guru asked that Solar manage his posthumous image, likeness, etc. on behalf of himself, and his son KC, and that DJ Premier not associate himself with Guru.
Solar claimed that Guru had awoken from his coma to release the statement whilst members of the rapper's family stated that he never regained conciousness from his coma. Guru's family claimed that Solar prevented them from contact with Guru during the latter's final illness.

THE NON-PEOPLE THINKING OF SOUTHERN and NORTHERN OREGON....AMERICA

 The non-people of Hexagram 12

‘Obstructing it, non-people.
No harvest in noble one’s constancy.
Great goes, small comes.’

The ‘usual’ interpretation of the Judgement of Hexagram 12 is that there are bad people at work, dominating the environment, sabotaging the noble one’s good efforts. And sometimes, indeed, it can mean exactly that – in particular, that someone is promoting malicious rumours.

Some translations offer an alternative perspective. James Legge writes of ‘the want of good understanding between men’; Thomas Cleary, in his Taoist I Ching, has ‘denial of humanity’. The ‘non-person’ might not be a ready scapegoat for Obstruction; it might represent the attitude of mind that caused it.

‘Non people’, fei ren, are outside the system, not like us – which is a short step from concluding that they are not quite real people. In the Book of Songs, a miserable speaker asks if his ancestors are fei ren – inhuman, without compassion – that they should let him suffer. (Shijing 204)
They are literally ‘bandit people’, outlaws. The online Chinese etymological dictionary shows that ‘bandit’ is fault or evils concealed within an enclosure. The word for ‘evils’ seems to be derived from ‘broken wings’: a perfect image for something misaligned, that doesn’t work because it doesn’t fit together.

It’s not hard to see when a group is labelled as ‘non-people’ politically, they may actually become socially unacceptable, or just unthinkable, to ask how they are motivated as human beings. (Think of the various uses of the word ‘terrorist’, nigger, Mexican...) Labels can become a way of thinking: ‘You wouldn’t expect him to ask directions, he’s male’; ‘well, she would react like that, she’s a Scorpio’; ‘of course he’s hard working, Asians are.’

Much more subtle, much harder to see, are the ways we use labels as a shortcut in individual relationships. She’s hypersensitive, he’s egotistical… and that explains him or her, in a neat package. It may in fact allow you to predict another person’s behavior with great accuracy – but this is a cheap substitute at best for understanding them. When Hexagram 12 comes up in a reading, this predictive labelling may be getting so rigid as insidiously to replace real connection between people. Whatever is outside the labelled package becomes invisible.

I think Hexagram 12 can also refer to labels we have for ourselves. Synchronistically enough, I just browsed my way to an article on ‘Quantum labels’, which begins:

“What labels do you wear? Parent…student…professional…intellectual? Healer…writer…lover…friend? Labels are not only what others “see” us as, but also invisible containers and delimiters we apply to ourselves. Labels represent beliefs we hold about ourselves, and sometimes those beliefs are ones we wish we didn’t have. Beliefs like “I’m lazy”, “I procrastinate”, “I’m not smart enough” and so on.”

The article goes on to the slightly quirky suggestion that we should literally wear labels to change our nature at the cellular level. But the idea of an ‘invisible container or delimiter’ reminds me of the ‘box’ in the character ‘fei‘. As long as you or anyone is wedged inside that box, no amount of nobility and constancy will get you anywhere…with people labeling you as a non-person, or unlike themselves.

As fun as it was to poke fun at NBA players for having terrible tattoos earlier this week, even we have to admit: Not all NBA players have ink that stinks. Unlike the J.R. DeShawn Stevenson
Call us crazy for leading off the list with this selection, but we actually enjoyed seeing D-Steve walk into Washington Wizards training camp last September with a crack in his forehead, a backwards Pittsburgh Pirates logo and a snapshot of Honest Abe Lincoln tatted on his face and neck. Completely ridiculous? Of course. But looking at DeShawn's face was like looking at a car crash--and we just couldn't stop looking.

 

Gilbert Arenas
Agent Zero Six is getting killed in the media right now, so allow us to show the Wizards point guard a little love. Hey, Gil: That twisted family tree you've got tatted across your back under the words "Family Is A Haven In A Heartless World"? Niiiiice.

 

Kobe Bryant
The cardinal rule of tattoos: Don't get your significant other's name tatted anywhere on your body (right, Tahiry?). Fortunately for the Los Angeles Lakers superstar, all rules go out the window when you get got cheating on them you're the best player in the NBA. Way to keep her, Kobe.

Plenty of sites have tried to shoot Chris "Birdman" Andersen down for the wings he's got inked on the insides of his arms. But, seriously, guys: Would you rather he still looked like this? Or this? Or this? We'll take the wings.

 

Carlos Boozer
Another crappy panther? Um, no. That's actually a grizzly bear, which represents the Utah Jazz forward's hometown of Juneau, Alaska. Seems a little bit cooler now, doesn't it?

 

LeBron James
King James has been going by the nickname "Chosen One" for years now. So it's only right that he have the name tatted across the top of his back for all of the minions of the NBA to see. Checkmate!

 

Paul Pierce
Ummm....wait, so about that whole "Chosen One" thing. Paul Pierce must have missed the memo 'cause he also has the words tatted on his back. But his declaration sits just below a larger tattoo that sits on top of the scars he still brandishes from a 2000 stabbing incident that nearly killed him. Sorry, LBJ, we're choosing to like this one, too.

 

Brandon Jennings
Dear J.R. Smith: If you're gonna ink the words "Young Money" on your body, this is the way to go. Right on the money, B Jennings.

 

Marquis Daniels
The Boston Celtics guard isn't shooting 100 percent when it comes to tattoos: He's reportedly got one on his left arm that is supposed to be his initials in Chinese characters but actually translates to mean "healthy woman roof." Nonetheless, the map of Florida etched across his back is spectacular--and the second best map of Florida we've ever seen.

 

Rasheed Wallace
Everyone's seen the Egyptian-themed tattoo that Boston Celtics forward Rasheed Wallace rocks on his right arm to pay homage to his family. But he took things to a whole new level in 2008 when he got his entire back covered to represent his love for his daughter. Daddy's little girl, for real!

 

Stephen Jackson
It's hard to figure exactly how insane you need to be to completely disregard NBA Commissioner David Stern's opinion on guns and get one tattooed on your body. But one look at Jackson's infamous tattoo tells us that's he definitely got to be up there.
